Direct to Garment (DTG) printing, often referred to as "digital" printing, operates akin to a large-scale inkjet printer specially designed for apparel customization. This innovative printing method is particularly well-suited for intricate designs boasting a diverse spectrum of print colors. It emerges as the go-to choice for smaller orders or those falling short of the minimum requirements for screen printing.
While DTG technology excels in rendering astonishingly detailed images with precision and finesse, it's important to acknowledge that it might not quite match the expansive versatility and vibrant results achieved through screen printing, especially when it comes to the selection of garments.
DTG printing is a bit like using a regular inkjet printer, but instead of paper, you're printing directly onto fabric. Specialized inks are sprayed onto the garment in thin layers, which then soak into the fibers.
Before printing, garments usually undergo a pre-treatment process. This pre-treatment ensures the ink binds well to the fabric, especially on colored garments, where it helps make the design more vivid. After this, garments are placed on a platen which holds them steady during the printing process.
A digital file of the design is loaded into the DTG printer, and the machine then prints the design directly onto the garment. Since this is a digital process, there's a lot of precision, allowing for a high level of detail and a broad color spectrum.
Post-printing, the garment undergoes a curing process, usually involving heat, to set the ink and ensure the design is wash-resistant. This step ensures the longevity and vibrancy of the print.
DTG is versatility and convenience, especially for small runs or intricate designs. DTG allows for highly detailed, full-color prints with no need for color separation, making it ideal for designs with gradients, shading, or photographic elements.
